Common Installation Questions

Everything you need to know about hardwood floor installation

How long does installation take?
Most installations take 3-7 days depending on the size of the area and whether finishing is required. Solid unfinished hardwood requires additional time for sanding, staining, and finishing. Pre-finished floors can be walked on immediately after installation.
What's the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?
Solid hardwood is 100% wood throughout, typically 3/4" thick, and can be refinished multiple times. Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer on top of plywood layers, making it more stable in humid conditions and suitable for basements. Both look beautiful and last for decades.
Can hardwood be installed over concrete?
Yes, but only engineered hardwood should be installed over concrete. The concrete must be properly tested for moisture, sealed if necessary, and the engineered flooring is typically glued down or floated. Solid hardwood requires a wood subfloor.
How much does hardwood floor installation cost?
Cost varies based on wood species, grade, room size, and installation complexity. Generally, expect $8-15 per square foot installed for domestic woods, and $12-25+ for exotic species. This includes materials, installation, and finishing if needed. Contact us for a free detailed estimate.
Do I need to be home during installation?
Not necessarily. Many clients provide access and check in periodically. We'll discuss your preferences during planning. We maintain a clean, professional work site and communicate regularly about progress and any decisions needed.
What maintenance does new hardwood require?
Hardwood is remarkably easy to maintain. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris. Damp mop occasionally with hardwood floor cleaner. Avoid excess water, use felt pads under furniture, and keep nails trimmed on pets. With minimal care, your floors will look beautiful for decades.
